In India, if we are really concern of women empowerment as we talk on it—and also keep on the way of Indian Culture, I think we should bring up the girl child as an individual women, who has capability to shape her own life and knows to take up her right to create herself An adult woman must have a right to choose her own life-partner and should not be a "liability "of her parents, whom he will transfer to other owner with a huge amount of Tax.
Today if we care for our Culture and want to revive the era of Sita and Droupadi—we may look to them for other alternatives of marriage also i.e., the system of Swayambara Sabha in marriage. If we can teach our daughter to be tolerant like Sita we must allow her the freedom Sita enjoyed! She should have the right to select her life-partner in her own way. All the famous women of ancient India --Sita, Sati, Sabitri, Droupadi, Kunti, Damayanti, everyone chose the person even God she wanted to marry. Our modern educated parents send their daughter to college and university –but in the time of marriage they never like to give her liberty –they oppress the girl and give her in marriage to a person whom the family thinks is best fit for her and for the Bank-balance of the family.
If we really love our country, our culture, we must have self-respect and love to our family at first. Love does not mean possessing and controlling one’s life and put one’s life on a Xerox machine of Tradition. Every individual is unique and requires her own space and atmosphere. We have endless love and affection for our daughters and we always want she gets a worthy husband and be happy. But in the way we try to make her happy –is it really the right way? By suppressing one’s personality, and chaining one to an age-old system—what we want to offer her? A young girl of 21st century does really strive to get it?
Customs of old time was made to suit the need of the time and social atmosphere prevailed that time. If we want to grow we have to listen to the voice of the current generation and create our own social system. Still if we live in 21st century and want our girls and bohu to live in ancient time –we will lose our girls, our women. They will become a model of past only. A steep reduction in female ratio in our society is also telling this fact very loudly—933 women per 1000 male---that we do not love and care our daughters properly.—
We are only imposing our wish on her. Can not we lend an ear to her and listen to her own voice in her life?
